FEB 21, 2011 - Cavan Boys the Comeback Kids in Malvern Tournament

It was an action packed family day weekend for the Cavan FC U 10 boy’s soccer team who competed in the Malvern Family Day Tournament against some of the top club teams in the Province last Sunday and Monday. Playing together for the first time the newly formed squad saw 5 returning players make the trip to Scarborough along with 4 newly acquired team members.
The first game was a faced paced affair against Etobicoke who jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first half. Cavan turned it on in the second half on an early goal from Quinn Clancey finishing off a nice solo run with a strike from just over half on the modified field. First half goaltender Andre Vilcini tied the game with 5 minutes remaining on a nice effort up the middle. The game ended 2-2 and saw Cavan tied for the division lead with four other teams as Vaughan and the host club Malvern tied as well.
The second game of the night on Sunday was faced paced and fans saw back and forth action with no scoring until Vaughan managed a goal late in the first half. Showing no quit Cavan rookie and underager Jordan Caravaggio tied it up in the second half which would be the final goal of the game ending in another tie 1-1.
In the final game of the night Cavan faced the host club Malvern in a deciding game for advancement to the championship round. The game was by far the most physical game ever for the Cavan boys who after early injuries were left with no subs and down by 3 at the half. The boys managed to get within 2 on a goal by Taggert Krotz however the physical play of Malvern proved too much and the final score of 6-1 would mean Malvern moved on to the semi finals.
In the second day consolation games Cavan would go undefeated with an early tie against Malvern B and a rematch win against Etobicoke. Once again down early the Cavan players rallied in the second half with two unanswered goals in the second half. Nolan Masterson finished strong in close to tie the game and Scott Arsenault sealed the deal late in the second half for the win.
Sharing the Kawartha Montessori and Chemong Family Dentistry hardest working player honours for the tournament were Jordan Caravaggio and Nolan Masterson. Nexicom’s offensive MVP went to Quinn Clancey and the Trackside Interiors Defensive MVP for his play both in and out of the net was Scott Arsenault.
The boys did not manage to come away with any trophies or medals but hopefully came away with some more valuable knowledge…toughness is not defined by the ability of bigger players to impose their will on smaller players but by smaller players who refuse to accept defeat and continue to fight.
Who are we?
CFC…small club big heart!
Cavan Kicks Back - Winter 2010

Maple Leaf - Cavan FC recently completed their first ever uniform recycling and donation program aimed at helping out children in third world countries. The program had been discussed at different times in the past however this fall was the first time the club actively sourced out donations of old and unused soccer equipment from its members.
Each season players in the house league program receive Jersey's and shorts from the club and rep team players receive two sets of jersey's and uniform kits so for families with multiple kids growing every year the surplus of equipment can add up quickly. The idea was initially put forth by the Clubs new director of Coaching Matt Vaughan who with 4 children involved in soccer and family connections in Guyana had seen first hand that many children in developing countries simply never have access to uniforms or equipment for sports and recognized an opportunity to recycle some of the families old gear.
The request for donations was put out in September to the entire Club and initial response was good with about 200lbs of assorted Jersey’s, shoes and clothing coming in. The gear was collected, sorted and cleaned and by November was ready to be shipped however the contacts with the local soccer organization in Guyana were not corresponding and shipping quotes were much higher than anticipated. The difficulties with the Guyana soccer organization and rising shipping costs were quickly turned in to an opportunity for three local Cavan FC players who were planning on visiting Central America over the Christmas break and volunteered to transport the equipment to Nicaragua.
Maple Leaf - Cavan FC had been put in contact with an organization in Nicaragua (the second poorest country in Central America) called Comunidad Connect who were involved in local soccer projects and were very eager to help distribute the recycled soccer gear.
Comunidad Connect is an organization with the goal of bringing together the local and foreign communities in Nicaragua in an effort to achieve sustainable development and poverty alleviation. In many cases this cooperation is tangible, such as when participants of the VolunTourism program work side by side with local residents and stay with local families. Other projects like The Sports Park, a recently completed construction project, provide a place where the two groups can meet in friendly competition and is located in San Juan Del Sur Nicaragua. The recently completed $50,000.00 project is home to the local Futsal league and the offices of Comunidad Connect and was the final destination for the donated equipment.
For Cavan FC players Jacob Jeffrey, Caleb Clancey and Quinn Clancey transporting the donations from Canada to Nicaragua proved more challenging than initially thought however they did manage to deliver the equipment and saw first had how much it was needed and of course appreciated. The first batch of donated equipment was basically passed from player to player in a Cavan to Nicaragua trade off with the kids selecting and sorting out a team set consisting of white Nexicom, Baxter Creek Golf Club and Boston Pizza Jerseys donated by two different Cavan teams. The Cavan boys had met players from the neighbourhood…Las Plantas Barrio and decided to supply them with uniforms before handing over the rest of the donations to Comunidad Connect.
For the Las Plantas boys who ranged in age from 9-12 these were their first ever soccer uniforms. They were so happy that the Cavan players were asked to play with their team in the local Futsal league. The next day following the game we were walking through the neighbourhood past the small homes, some made only of wood and sheet metal with no windows or doors every one of the donated jerseys could be seen hanging on the clothesline freshly hand washed.
Maple Leaf - Cavan FC, Comunidad Connect and of course the Las Plantas boys would like to thank everyone who took the time to bring in their old and unused soccer gear proving once again that Cavan is still a small club with a big heart.
