History

In the Spring of 2010, Maple Leaf - Cavan FC affiliated with the Toronto FC professional soccer club and was one of 8 clubs who joined with TFC to create a Club Academy Program in house. Toronto FCs Club Academy Program (CAP) is a technical partnership with progressive youth clubs in Ontario that meet Toronto FCs standards for elite player development.

The goal of the newly launched program was to provide a stable and continuous path of development for young, elite players from their introduction to the game to full-time professionals with Toronto FC. In keeping with the CSAs Wellness to World Cup long term player development model, the CAP promotes the need to target the training habits and environment of elite players in Ontario while creating a collective of full-time soccer coaches and managers whose primary goal is the development of players and coaches. In the fall of 2010, a coaching clinic was held with TFC Academy coaches. Cavan FC coaches were also invited to the TFC Coaches open houses sponsored by Tim Hortons for the purpose of coaching education & support.

The ground-breaking ceremony of Toronto FCs Academy and Training Facility located in Downsview Park was held on Tuesday October 11th, 2011 & it attracted local and national media attention. Many of those in attendance were given an aerial tour of Downsview Park where the Reds will use 14-acres for a new fieldhouse and four pitches for training and academy. The Academy and Training Facility is expected to cost Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment more than $17.5 million and is scheduled to open in spring of 2012 (see www.torontofc.ca for more information).

Frequently Asked Questions

Question: Will you know times for different ages before people have to pay?
Answer: Yes. The tentative schedule is posted at www.mlcfc.com/rep_cap_schedule.php. If we need to move a group due to numbers and this creates a conflict, we will issue a refund for the players affected.

Question: Do you have to pay the full amount in advance regardless of the number of sessions you are able to attend or can you pay by session? Some players play other sports that may conflict with the Academy time and may only be able to make a few sessions.
Answer: The Academy sessions will be progressive, each week will build on the previous. The program will not work well if different players "drop in" each week, and could actually detract from the "attend every week" participants. If a player cannot attend at least 10 or 11 of the 14 sessions, we suggest they choose not to participate. Your team coach can always connect with Alex Penello and request suggestions for practice at home for a given player that has another sport that conflicts with the Academy. The standard rate will apply to all players, regardless of the number of sessions they can actually attend.

Question: Is the plan to keep teams grouped together or mix them up?
Answer: The plan is to keep teams grouped together, although they may be mixed in with another team/age group for a given drill. We are trying to keep the ages close together for a given 1 hour 15 minute time slot so that interaction can happen as required to make drills work. A player should attend with his team (i.e. a 2002 child playing on a 2001 team should attend with his/her 2001 team).

Question: Can a player change his/her timeslot if they have a conflict one week?
Answer: Most likely. The player's parents should run this by Alex Penello first before attending a session outside their child's regular time.

Question: Will a team or individual players get to sign up for their session of choice?
Answer: The tentative schedule is posted at www.mlcfc.com/rep_cap_schedule.php. Players need to attend their assigned session. A coach can contact Angela Penello if the tentative schedule does not work for the majority of the team.
